DIY Sanitizing Wipes

I think we are all having the same struggles in finding cleaning products at the local store.  In our house we have been making our own natural and green multi-purpose spray cleaner for a few years now.  We don't use Lysol (or didn't), or bleach.  We rely on Thyme Oil and White Vinegar to handle most cleaning needs.

With Corona 19, and the need to sanitize everything we had a can of Lysol wipes that I pulled out of under one of the sinks, and have been using it to wipe down all groceries before bringing them inside, as well as all car handles, steering wheel, etc.  In speaking with a couple of loved ones, I found that they don't have any wipes of any kind - so we figured we would check at the store, and nada, zero, zilch! No luck!

So after watching some YouTube videos, and doing a couple hours of reading and research, I have made a few containers of DIY Sanitizing Wipes.  I will give my recipe - please know there are many variations as you will see if you google DIY Sanitizing Wipes! I also am showing these using paper towels - since I will be giving these away I wanted it to be as easy to use as possible.  When making them for my house - I have the perfect old sheet to cut up to serve as my "reusable" and washable wipes.

You will need:

  • Large Plastic container with secure top to fit half a roll of paper towel in
  • Half a roll of paper towel (saw in half using a serrated knife)
  • 1 and 1/2 Cups of Alcohol 70% or higher
  • 15 Drops of Lemon Essential Oil (If you don't have essential oils, don't stress - this is mainly for fragrance)
  • 5 Drops of Dish Detergent or Castile Soap

In a 2 cup measuring cup, pour your 1 and 1/2 Cups Alcohol.  Add 15 drops Lemon Essential Oil (or Lavender), and add 5 drops of your Dish Detergent. Stir well, and pour over your 1/2 roll of paper towel in your container slowly - allowing it to absorb in as you pour it.  Let sit for 20 minutes or so- then pull out the center cardboard core of your paper towel.  Keep secured tightly - and tada! You have sanitizing wipes with an alcohol content above 60% ready to kill all germs! This is also much less expensive and much less toxic than Lysol or Clorox Wipes!
